Hi, this is Chichi, the community curator for S-TOKYO!

At the beginning of November, I participated in "TADAIMA SHIMODA," a networking event for overseas digital nomads held in Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture!

I was invited by Elena, who always helps me run the Digital Nomad Meetup at S-TOKYO, and I had a great time with nomads and local Shimoda residents :)

About 'TADAIMA SHIMODA'

This program is being implemented under contract from Shimoda City as part of its efforts to build a digital nomad attraction model, encouraging visits from digital nomads who prefer medium- to long-term stays of one month or more. Currently, more than 70 people* from 11 countries and regions, including practitioners who are running digital nomad acceptance programs in various countries, have confirmed their arrival. In addition to the "World Culture Festival 2024," which will be run in collaboration with local high school students, the program aims to deepen relationships through activities such as sushi chef experiences and exchanges with local residents through music and sports, as well as to contribute to the growth of the local economy through experiences with businesses run by local companies and practical feedback from an international perspective.

The co-living space "Kazemachi Shimoda" was located right in front of the river where fishing boats were moored, and this was the main accommodation.

The town of Shimoda is nestled between mountains and the sea, and is surrounded by abundant nature, making it a very peaceful place.

At the welcome dinner on the first day, the locals of Shimoda presented gifts to the digital nomads from overseas. They wrote their names in kanji characters and handed them out! Each character was chosen to perfectly suit their personality, and it was so lovely!

The next morning, I went to a restaurant near the hotel with some digital nomads for breakfast! When you think of Shimoda, you think of splendid alfonsino! The restaurant Elena recommended was definitely a great choice!

After that, we did some coworking at "WITH A TREE," a huge warehouse in Shimoda, Izu! This place is a relaxing spot used for creative activities, coworking, and events, and it was a space that stimulated creativity!

The pleasant breeze coming in from outside made me feel great. It also made it easier to work!

Izu Shimoda is easily accessible from Tokyo by train in about 3 hours for around 6,000 yen (or around 4,000 yen if you have to transfer). Having actually been there, I found it very easy to get to and enjoy the abundant nature, making it perfect for a short weekend trip!

The climate is relatively mild throughout the year, and it seems that outdoor sports and activities can be enjoyed even in winter.

I would definitely recommend this to the digital nomads who come to S-TOKYO!
