Hello, this is Chichi, S-TOKYO Community Curator!
At the beginning of November, I attended “TADAIMA SHIMODA,” a social event for international digital nomads in Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture!
I was invited by Elena, who always organizes the Digital Nomad Meetup at S-TOKYO, and had a great time with nomads and Shimoda locals:)
About "TADAIMA SHIMODA"
This program is a model building project to attract digital nomads, who prefer to stay in Shimoda for one month or longer, to Shimoda City. Currently, a total of more than 70 visitors* from 11 countries and regions including Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and South America, including practitioners who are engaged in the business of accepting digital nomads in various countries, have been selected to visit Shimoda. In addition to the “World Culture Festival 2024,” which will be managed together with local high school students, the program aims to help grow the local economy by deepening relationships through exchanges such as sushi-making experiences, music and sports with local residents, as well as experiencing businesses operated by local businesses and providing practical feedback from overseas perspectives.

The coliving “Kazemachi Shimoda” was located right in front of the river where the fishing boats docked, and this was the main accommodations.
Here is the view from the rooftop!
The town of Shimoda is very calm and peaceful, surrounded by mountains and the sea, and has a lot of nature.
At the welcome dinner on the first day, the locals in Shimoda gave gifts to the digital nomads from overseas. They wrote their names in kanji characters and handed them over! Each character was written in kanji, and it was a perfect match for their characters!
The next morning, the digital nomads and I went to a diner near the hotel for breakfast! Elena's recommendation for a restaurant was a sure thing!
After that, we went coworking at WITH A TREE, a huge warehouse in Izu-Shimoda! This was a relaxing place for everyone used for creative activities, coworking, and events, and a space that stimulated creativity!
The comfortable breeze from outside felt so good. It was comfortable to work in!
Izu-Shimoda is only a 3-hour train ride from Tokyo, and can be reached by a single train for about 6,000 yen (4,000 yen for a change of trains). When I actually went there, I thought it was perfect for a short weekend trip because it is very easy to access and enjoy the rich nature!
The climate is relatively mild all year round, and outdoor sports and activities are available even in winter.
I would definitely recommend this place to the digital nomads who come to S-Tokyo!
Thank you, everyone in Shimoda!
